Toronto, ONThe Law Foundation of Ontario’s Community Leadership in Justice Fellowship” comes to fruition this fall.

The purpose of the LFO’s Fellowship is to bring leaders from public interest organizations, which interact with the legal system, together with Ontario universities, colleges and law schools - and ultimately strengthen community-based partnerships.

Two individuals, who represent true leadership and advocate important social issues, have been selected:

  • Kimberly Murray, Executive Director of Aboriginal Legal Services of Toronto will be affiliated with Ryerson University’s School of Criminal Justice. During her Fellowship, she will undertake research on Aboriginal deaths in custody in Canada and will also organize a Lecture Series for community activists, legal reformers and community agencies involved in Aboriginal issues

  • Kim Pate, Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies will teach the program: Increasing Women’s Access to Justice at the

University of Ottawa

“The focus of the Community Leadership in Justice Fellowship is less on traditional academic contributions and more on mentorship, activism and leadership,” explained

LFO Chair, Larry Banack.

After reviewing many deserving proposals, the LFO selected Ryerson University and the University of Ottawa as the host institutions. The candidates illustrate the greatest potential to expose the academic community to distinct and challenging perspectives on law

and the justice system.

The LFO was established in 1974 to establish and maintain a fund for legal education and legal research, legal aid, and the establishment, operation, and maintenance of law libraries. The LFO awards grants to organizations for law-related projects and initiatives. For more information on the LFO and the Community Leadership in Justice Fellowship, visit www.lawfoundation-on.org.
